Today is the first day of the advent calendar for 2019, so we thought a bit of chocolate would be a good way to start the festive season!
Traditionally, the Yule Log was selected in a nearby forest on Christmas Eve, decorated with ribbons, and dragged back home – a practice that became known as ‘Bringing in the Yule Log’. The Yule Log was said to have magical properties that ensured good luck in the coming year to everyone who helped bring the Yule Log in from the forest.
The yule log was then brought to the fireplace and a blessing was said over it, asking that it should last forever. Wine was the poured over the log, placed in the fire grate and lit with a torch made from a piece of wood left over from last year’s Yule Log. After lighting, it was kept burning throughout the twelve days of Christmas to bring the household good luck. Since then, our sweet tooth has got the better of us and the Chocolate Yule Log has become a staple for Christmas Dinner – better save us a slice!
